Lilacs bloom, and pollen flies. Giovanni di Lorenzo retrieves his dinner jacket from the dungeon. In Berlin, the designated ‘PR Executive of the Year’, Deutsche Bahn’s head of communications Oliver Schumacher boards an overcrowded train to Hamburg and has to sit on the floor in the corridor – stories that start with German Rail apparently always end in exasperation. Windjammers weave their way along the Elbe to the port. Ursula von der Leyen drapes herself in a dance-class dress and, thus styled, takes herself to the Hamburg Schauspielhaus which has been decked out to the nines.
